This resource focuses on the methods and considerations used to present, conserve and take care of textile based artworks in the Heide Collection.
The Heide Collection comprises art and cultural material from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and includes many textile works, by artists including Mirka Mora, Lisa Gorman, Erica McGilchrist, Meredith Turnball, Hanna Tai, Sidney Nolan and Paul Yore.
Specific conservation techniques and materials (e.g. climate control, lighting, gloves, display cases) are used in the care and conservation of these works. This resource features on the specific techniques used for the care and conservation of textile based works in the Heide Collection, and includes some specific case studies from the collection.

This resource focuses on Hair Pieces. The exhibition explores the evocative and complex significance of hair in contemporary culture through a selection of recent Australian and international works of art. For millennia hair has been a resonant and compelling site of meaning, transmitting ideas about gender, mythology, status and power, the body, psychology, feminism and notions of beauty. At once radiant and repellent, and often richly symbolic, it has always assumed a particular importance in relation to the self, history and society.
In this education resource, we will examine three themes of the exhibition: Identity and Society, Uncanny Possibilities, and Power Dynamics. In doing so, we will consider the works of the following artists represented in the exhibition: Ana Mendieta, Marina Abramović and Ulay, Sonia Boyce, Janine Antoni, Nusra Latif Qureshi, Wes Placek, Rosslynd Piggott, Zhang Hong Chun, Charlie Sofo and Debris Facility Pty Ltd, Georgia Banks, Lou Hubbard, Jiang Jian, Louise Weaver and Peter Ellis, Christina May Carey, Christian Thompson, Ai Yamaguchi, Polly Borland, Tarryn Gill, Shih Yung-Chun, John Meade, Julie Rrap, Patricia Piccinni, Chunxiao Qu, Hayley Millar Baker, William Wegman, Edith Dekyndt, Mona Hatoum, Kemang Wa Lehulere, Karla Dickens, J.D. &#8216;Okhai Ojeikere, S.J Norman.
For educators it is important to note that the exhibition is not strictly speaking a thematic project, but rather it is grounded in the artists’ shared interest in the symbolic, metaphoric and material possibilities of hair, as well as its suggestiveness. While there are affinities and threads that connect different works, the curator Melissa Keys was more interested in creating an exhibition that explored the complex significance of hair in a way that is compelling and open-ended.

This resource focuses on Heide Modern: A Space Between. The exhibition explores the concept of home as a site where conversations, recreation, labour, intimate relationships and closely held values and beliefs cohabitate, and considers how architecture shapes lived experience. The exhibition reflects on ideas of memory and domesticity, and the intersection of private and public life in the context of a former residence that is now a much-loved museum. This resource focuses specifically on the works held in the Heide Collection of artists Micky Allan, Stephen Benwell, Jon Campbell, Zoë Croggon, David McDiarmid, Joy Hester, Hilarie Mais, Erica McGilchrist, Rose Nolan and Jenny Watson. Students are encouraged to consider how the architecture of the Heide Modern building enhances or influences the viewing experience of the artworks, and whether experiencing art in a space where people lived and shared experiences adds to its emotional impact.

A surrealist before she even knew of the movement, Lee Miller was one of the most original photographic artists of the twentieth century. From early on she rejected the expectations placed on her as a woman and an artist and set her own rules, demonstrating the self-determination that would sustain her creativity for more than 30 years. This exhibition of 100 photographs spanning Miller’s career takes the viewer on a remarkable journey, revealing her unerring ability to capture the marvellous in the everyday, create new perspectives onto the world, synthesise beauty and horror, and express her deep humanity.
This education resource can be used to assist in the interpretation of Lee Miller’s work from 1929 to 1943 through historical and cultural frameworks. Questions encourage students to engage critically with the historical and cultural context of Lee Miller&#8217;s life, recognizing the interconnectedness of her personal experiences and artistic evolution. These questions can be used as a springboard for discussions, research, and creative reflections on Lee Miller&#8217;s multifaceted life and contributions to art and photography.

Lee Miller&#8217;s son and curator of Surrealist Lee Miller, Antony Penrose, visited Heide from the UK for the opening of the exhibition. We sat down with him in the gallery to find out more about his mother&#8217;s remarkable legacy. He talks about the choices he made as a curator, such as the selection of works, finding the theme and narrative, avoiding sensationalising the war photographs, and showcasing the importance of Surrealism in Miller’s life.

Melbourne based photographer Jane brown takes us through her photographic darkroom and shows us some of the practices that artist Lee Miller would have used throughout her photographic career.

This resource focuses on the methods and considerations used to present, conserve and take care of artworks in the Heide Collection. The core of the Heide Collection comprises 500 artworks assembled from the 1930s to the 1970s representing artists now regarded as central figures in the history of Australian modernism. This resource also explores Heide Modern as another distinctive gallery space that similarly has heritage overlays. Heide Modern exhibitions are often site-responsive installations that are in conversation with the building’s much admired warm palette of materials and harmonious spatial qualities, whereas the Heide Cottage display celebrates the foundation story of the museum with works from the Collection by artists in the Heide Circle.

Presented in the celebrated modernist building, Heide Modern, Eye Looking at Large Glass Broken is a major new body of work by Melbourne-based artist Raafat Ishak consisting of sculptural objects, a sound work and a series of paintings. Thought provoking and richly layered, the exhibition highlights the ongoing social and cultural change that is transforming contemporary cultures globally through multiple points of view and diversity of expression and creativity.

The doyenne of modernist sculpture, Barbara Hepworth was one of the leading British artists of her generation and the first woman sculptor to achieve international recognition. The first exhibition of her work in Australia, Barbara Hepworth: In Equilibrium brings together more than forty works from prestigious international and national collections, including sculptures in stone, wood, bronze and other metals and a select group of paintings. Introducing Australian audiences to her remarkable oeuvre, the exhibition has been developed in consultation with the Hepworth Estate and has been designed by award-winning architecture firm Studio Bright.
