Mirka for Melbourne

This exhibition presents Heide’s recent acquisitions from the magical studio of Mirka Mora, who sadly passed away in 2018 at the age of 90. Thanks to the generosity of over a thousand people who responded to the ‘Mirka for Melbourne’ campaign, Heide has been able to purchase a wonderful range of Mirka’s artworks, creative tools, art materials, furniture and personal effects for the museum collection. The donations made by members of the public were matched by the Victorian State Government, ensuring Mirka’s legacy will live on at Heide in a tangible way for generations to come.

The exhibition also includes other significant acquisitions funded by the campaign, including the painting When the Soul Sleeps (1970), the famous Tolarno mural (c. 1966), and Mirka’s rich archive, with a selection of family photographs, diaries, mementos and correspondence with some of Australia’s most famous artists on display.

We are delighted to share this new collection in Mirka for Melbourne, an exhibition that recreates the colourful ambience of the artist’s home and studio, and acknowledges her remarkable contribution to Australia’s cultural life.
